MLO 1: Language Proficiency
When looking at language within the major, language proficiency is crucial in the development of communication within the language, literature interpretation, among other things that are necessary in one's development of a native language. Language proficiency all around prepares students to essentially conquer real-world conversations and builds on that, by having students learn effective ways to transition from different ideas to build an essential profile of language use in real-world scenarios such as job interviews, formal and informal conversations. Language proficiency applied in these courses pushes students to apply their language skills to meet the advanced low level of language proficiency in accordance with the ACTFL guidelines. One assignment that stands out and reflects the language proficiency major learning outcome is an assignment that was created in Spanish 301, my composition and oral practice course, in which my task was to write a made-up creative short story. I was tasked to create a story in which I narrate the life of three friends spending their time in a big city essentially creating a story plot of about 800 words. The reason why I chose this assignment is because it challenged me to use transition words and apply a style of writing that is useful in many ways when it comes to oral practice as well. This assignment was beneficial in helping me expand my knowledge in the Spanish language. The assignment illustrates my knowledge in the Spanish language by utilizing creative writing and finding ways to use effective language to propose ideas in writing and orally. One challenge that still remains in this area is effective word choice in order to create effective sentence flow and being able to jump from ideas without causing any break in the sentence flow. I will overcome this challenge over time as I continue to use the Spanish language.
